Sea cadets from TS Springs, with their officers, gathered in Kwa-Thema on Wednesday afternoon to hand out food parcels.
The food parcels were donated to families of the cadets who are struggling financially during lockdown.
This was the third such donation received from the South Africa Sea Cadets.Most of the cadets at Training Ship Springs, known as TS Springs, come from impoverished families and the lockdown has impacted their ability to put food on the table.
Over 30 families received food parcels.

“Our cadets embody the values and skills we try to instil in them.
“We try to instil that sense of maturity, self-discipline.
“We give them the ground to make decisions which a lot of youth groups don’t do.
“We tell them, ‘you tell us what you want to do and we’ll say yes or no’.
“Today, they were in charge of putting together the food parcels and handing them out to the families.

“We’ve found that giving the cadets the opportunity to take responsibility and make decisions as adults helps them grow immensely, and there’s no boundary they can’t cross.
“This is just another example of them looking out for each other,” said Lt Commander Chris Hand, commanding officer at TS Springs.
Cadet activities, such as training camps and courses, have been cancelled for the rest of the year due to lockdown regulations.
