Members of the public turned away at civic centre

Civic centre sanitised, but poor communication frustrates council and public

The Spring Civic Centre was closed last Thursday morning without prior warning to members of the public or staff.

The centre was disinfected by the Church of Scientology, according to information communicated by City of Ekurhuleni regional manager Bafana Zemo.

Zemo informed employees at the centre the church would be disinfecting the entire building at 10.30am.

The communication from Zemo read: “Kindly note I just received a message from the Church of Scientology that they will be at our building at 10.30am to disinfect/sanitise the entire building.

“Accordingly, kindly assist with opening up the offices for such a process to unfold.”

Employees duly vacated the building and security guards barred any members of the public from entering the building.

Members of the public wishing to pay fines or bills were unable to do so and were told to return the next day.

Ward councillor Dean Stone found the situation unacceptable.

“How can you not let people know the building will be closed for an entire day in the middle of the week?

“Surely they planned this in advance and someone should have sent a message out earlier, telling people the centre will be closed,” he said.

Comment requested from the City of Ekurhuleni will be published once it has been received.
