Lushanta Reading Foundation brings reading to the needy

Representatives from the Lushanta Reading Foundation were at the Tonk Meter Crossing Shopping Centre on Saturday morning.
The NPO aims to cultivate the habit of reading in young children and expand their education, especially those in the rural areas.
The classes are free and are offered once a week at the shopping centre between 9am and 1pm, with a new theme featured each week.
Volunteers Tallulah Brady and Jared Hodgkinson read to the children in a very engaging and accessible way.
The children were enthused and eager to learn.

The shopping centre’s marketing specialist, Carolynn Weedon, said: “We want to create a relaxing environment for the children in which to read.
“We try our best to listen to them and encourage them to ask questions. Also, we want to help the children catch up with any schooling they have missed during the lockdown period.”
Lushanta served tea, coffee and sandwiches to people waiting in the long queues to collect their Sassa grants at Pick n Pay.
These queues are often long and most people who depend on Sassa grants are disabled or elderly.
Donations of books and stationery to the organisation are welcome.
