Pine graduated from the University of Pretoria, where he obtained a degree in town planning.
At the age of 27, he was appointed chief town planner of the Springs Municipality in the East Rand, where he remained for 20 years before going into private practice.
After his daughters and their families moved to Hermanus, Pine and Clara (his wife of 40 years) decided to follow them.
Pine loved his family dearly and always placed them first.
Pine passed through a winter period during which Clara died, coinciding with a failed development in which he sustained heavy financial losses.
With characteristic courage and determination, Pienaar went back to work as a principal town planner.
He later married Winsome Margaret Pienaar (née Swanepoel).
