• Listen up, says ratepayers
The East Rand Ratepayers Association has taken its fight over Ekurhuleni metro councillors being in arrears to the city manager.
The story that the councillors owed the local municipality thousands made headlines in 2003 and the ratepayers’ body has been fighting it and similar issues for some time.
The councillors were said to owe R400 000.
Sid Osborne, of the association, said they met with the city manager because they could not get answers elsewhere.
What worsened the situation was the fact that to get into office, councillors had to prove they were not in arrears for services, meaning all the councillors who were in arrears accumulated the debt while they were in office.
Osborne says the crux of their meeting with the city manager was to ensure that councillors are treated the same way as other members of the public.
Mayor Duma Nkosi was on record saying some of the councillors were not paying their accounts because they had queries on them.
