Local actress on her way to stardom
I was so happy and excited I nearly burst into tears when I saw their message.
Caitlin Swanepoel (17), a Grade 12 learner at Hoërskool Hugenote, dreams of one day becoming a famous actress, but a lack of funds threatens to thwart her aspirations.
A major opportunity presented itself to Caitlin when her aunt sent her a message about a local acting competition.
The competition, hosted by ABS Productions, has given aspiring actors the opportunity to star in a short film.
Many eager actors sent videos of themselves performing a monologue to a judging panel.
The judges were impressed with the video Caitlin submitted and she was invited to an audition at the Blou Hond Theatre in Pretoria where she performed in front of a group of judges.
The actors that the judges liked the most, including Caitlin, have been invited to star in the short film and attend four acting workshops, as well as 12 online classes, which will take place in November.

How did you react when you saw you were chosen for the audition?
I was so happy and excited I nearly burst into tears when I saw their message.
When did you decide you wanted to become an actress?
I’ve wanted to act since I was very young.
I love watching movies and want to get involved in making them. Art has always been one of my biggest passions, and I’ve always done well in art classes at school, which included acting.
What did you do to prepare for the videos you submitted?
I watched many movies and studied the actresses very carefully. I studied their facial expressions, the way they moved and so on.
I also watched acting tutorial videos on YouTube, which helped me out a lot.
What kind of movies would you like to appear in?
Any kind of movie, but especially comedies and horror movies. I will take on any kind of role really.
What will you do to hone your acting skills?
I will practise as much as I need to, I will take on new projects to learn new skills and work with people who have more experience than me.

Where do you see your acting career going in the future?
Time will tell, but I would love to act in big Hollywood movies and local movies as well.
Will you stick to movies or would you like to perform on the stage as well?
Both will be great.
• Caitlin and her family need to pay R13 500 by October 31 for her to attend the workshops but are currently not in a financial position to make the payment.
Alternatively, they can pay R4 000 every month for four months.
