Man left homeless after shack fire

One shack was burned to the ground on Sunday after a pot of boiling water was left on a wooden fire.

Never Never informal settlement resident Jeremiah Kobue was left homeless after his shack burned down on Sunday morning.

According to the occupant, the fire started just before 07:30.

“As part of my morning routine, I was preparing to boil water using a wooden fire. I quickly stepped out to fetch water from our communal tap,” he said.

“I was surprised to be confronted by lots of smoke that came from inside the shack.”

City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson, William Ntladi, said firefighters found two shacks on fire.

Upon arrival, the firefighters found the shack where the fire is believed to have started completely burned out.

“The second shack only had one room burning,” said Ntladi.

“The fire was extinguished without further damage to other structures.”

Ntladi added that an assessment was conducted and no casualties were recorded on the scene due to the blaze.
