The community of Paul Kruger Oord united on Saturday to tackle an unsafe and unsightly open field.
“We saw an increase in break-ins during the night in the area. The grass was long, and it gets dark. And it just looked bad,” said Madre de Necker, one of the residents.
The open field is on Anthonie Street, close to Pinegrove Primary School.
“We complained to the metro numerous times, but we also realized that we could not wait for them. We had to act quickly,” she added.
The residents showed up early, ready to get their hands dirty. They also brought their own equipment to cut the grass.
“The clean-up has united us. Some of us have lived here for many years, but we don’t know each other,” said De Necker.
The group is now committed to doing more for the neighbourhood. The plan is to roll out more programmes soon.
Charmaine Kock, councillor of Ward 75, confirmed that the City of Ekurhuleni will provide trucks to collect the refuse and rubble from the clean-up.
“I am most grateful to every business, association and resident doing a little extra to ensure the town is clean.
“It all contributes to crime prevention because we know that criminals hide in the grass and dark areas.
“I am encouraged that the residents are as keen as I am to restore Springs to its former glory. A community that is united can never become divided. The residents have stepped up, and it is phenomenal,” said Kock.
