Fundraiser to get youth off the streets

On Saturday, the Hope, Faith and Grace Community Project held a fundraiser to raise much-needed finances for their youth centre.
“Drugs are one of the biggest issues we face in South Africa. Lives are lost and families get split up, leaving many children motherless and fatherless.
“We have seen the impact on our youth who have come in with addictions, how it overrides the importance of living a good life,” said the founder of the project, Kerry-Leigh Wright.
The centre caters for young adults aged 18 to 24 who come from difficult situations. The money raised will go to monthly expenses and a vehicle.
“We have had youth come our way who end up going back to the streets because the cravings get so bad. They just need the next fix and so compromise a place to stay and warm meals to eat.
“They lose everything they have to a banky for as little as R20. We have seen how desperately they want to be back with their families and try the best they can to have a normal life,” she added.
Wright said some families rejected the young addicts because they stole and lied to get what they needed.
“We at Hope, Faith and Grace Community Project decided to raise funds and positively impact our community by having a walk against drugs.
“We thank members from Redeemed, Methodist Selcourt Church, City Base, BNI and members from our local community for walking with us.
“We are pleading with the community to help in any way possible,” concluded Wright.
She said she hopes that this walk will show the youth that people are standing with them through their struggle against substance abuse and that they see they are not alone.
