Scotland-based soccer star eyes SA again

Scotland-based Rogan Read is on his way to wearing the Bafana Bafana kit.

Scotland-based Rogan Read is on his way to wearing the Bafana Bafana kit.

The 22-year-old former Veritas College learner plays for Deveronvale FC in the Scottish Highland Football League.

“I started playing at the age of seven at Springs Old Boys.

“My career grew as I went from there to a team called Transition Football. And from there, I played in the Engen Knockout Challenge tournament,” he explained.

Read did well enough to be invited to trials for clubs in Italy, America and then the UK.

“I started in Italy, ended up in England and signed a contract with a team called Barking FC. But because of the Covid restrictions, I had to come home from England.

“By God’s grace, once they lifted those restrictions, I was able to get trials in Scotland and signed for the team I play for now,” he added.

Read moved overseas when he was 18 but bounced between South Africa and the UK until he settled in Scotland last August.

“The level of play overseas is much higher in terms of standard, and the UK players are more physical.

“But I will give it to South African players as they are more hungry and work hard. From what I have seen, I believe South Africans are on par with players overseas,” he said.

Read’s goals are to represent his country, play for Bafana Bafana and play in a higher division in the next two years.
