Motorists warned to be vigilant at all times

Motorists are cautioned to be vigilant especially when driving at night.

A Springs resident and her daughter have been a victim of a crime recently. The incident happened as the duo stopped at an intersection of Main Reef Road at around 19:45 on January 4.

The streetlights had not been working. Someone opened the passenger door and snatched her daughter’s phone from her.

“In the process, they hurt badly her hand as she clasped her phone towards herself to keep it from being taken,“ says the mother.

The mother says her daughter is still scared and traumatised following the incident.

“At the back of her phone were photos of her and her best friend. All her school and class information is on her phone.”

SAPS Spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala cautions motorists who are driving, especially at night.

“Motorists should be vigilant, especially around traffic lights and stop signs. They should look on all sides and be wary of their immediate surroundings as cases of smash and grabs are rising.”

Tshabalala gives tips to residents about keeping their valuables and themselves safe.

“Motorists should refrain from having their valuables in the line of sight of bystanders.

“When leaving their cars, they should not leave their belongings in the open as they tempt people to break in.”
