Resident lives knee-deep in sewage swamp

The metro says illegal miners compromised the pipes.

A Daggafontein resident lives in the swampy waters of sewage in her home. Wendy Gessner, who resides on Petrel Road, says the issue has persisted for over five weeks without any solution.

“I have lodged many complaints and was given just as many reference numbers, but every time I enquire, I find out they have closed the complaint without coming to the property,” she laments.

She says her neighbours, who share the property with her, have experienced the same problems at their 11-year rental.

“It is horrible because we are getting sick, and not enough is being done about it,” she says.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini says it is a problem they are trying to solve.

“We are aware of the situation on Petrel Road and plan to solve the problem as soon as practical. Our major challenge is illegal miners who frequently tamper with our network,” he says.

Dlamini says they managed to open the line on February 8 and 9.

“On February 12, we found that illegal miners blocked yet another manhole adjacent to the one cleared on the dates above. We are organising an overhead pump to reduce and relieve the line,” he declares.

Residents are encouraged to use various social media platforms (X: CoE_Call Centre) or call 086 054 3000 to report service delivery issues.
