Scholar transport is regarded in law as a form of public transport for which an operating license is applicable.

With schools back in full swing for the second term, the EMPD will take firm action on noncompliance and lawlessness of school transport.

The safety of children in transit is a priority for the department and society.

Operations will be conducted at schools by the EMPD’s Social Crime Prevention Unit to monitor compliance and roadworthiness of all scholar transports.

Operators are encouraged to make sure to fully adhere to road safety or will be held accountable for noncompliance and will face the full might of the law.

Here are some tips for vehicles used to transport school children:

• Be less than 12 years old;

• Be registered at a roadworthy centre and licensed;

• Be tested at a roadworthy centre every six months;

• Have a valid operating license;

• Have a special vehicle fitness certificate; and

• Stipulate the number of passengers allowed in the vehicle.
