Criminals take advantage of friendly gesture

The victim was robbed and hijacked by three men after giving them a lift.

A 29-year-old man was robbed of his vehicle on Sunday afternoon after giving three men a lift.

The victim was driving his VW Polo from Nelspruit to Vereeniging. As he approached the N12/N4 split, he noticed three men, one of whom was limping.

He then pulled over to give them a lift.

According to Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, as the man approached the Etwatwa/Springs offramp on his way to drop them off, the front passenger started strangling him and the other two threatened to shoot him.

“The three men allegedly tied him up and then drove to a bush where he was forced into another vehicle.

“They took his cellphone, bank card, and pin to withdraw R1 000. They returned to Etwatwa to drop him off. He managed to get to the police station to report the incident,” Tshabalala said.

No injuries or shots were reported.
