Update on waste removal backlog

Waste removal services in parts of the area has stopped.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) will engage aggrieved communities of parts of Springs to address an impasse that has led to a stoppage in waste removal services in parts of the area.

Although the meeting’s date has not yet been confirmed, all parties have agreed that it must take place sometime this week.

The city’s waste removal teams, escorted by the EMPD, could address backlogs in the Welgedacht and Persida areas over the weekend and only Slovo Park is behind schedule.

The waste removal issues in parts of Springs started on Tuesday when certain members of the community, who were protesting over issues of employment in the waste removal contract, took workers hostage and illegally seized vehicles.

The city remains committed to restoring the service as soon as possible and apologises for the inconvenience this has caused.
