City of Ekurhuleni postpones meetings with independent power producers

The City of Ekurhuleni has postponed its planned public meetings on Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as part of the municipality’s efforts to address ongoing power shortages.

The City of Ekurhuleni has announced the postponement of a series of public participation meetings originally scheduled for later this week.

These meetings were to provide residents, businesses, and stakeholders with an opportunity to engage in the municipality’s plans to partner with independent power producers (IPPs) to address the city’s electricity generation challenges.

The community engagement sessions, which were part of the city’s public consultation process, have been rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Initially, meetings were slated for March 25 to 27 across various regions of the municipality, including Thembisa, Alberton, and Springs.

New dates will be confirmed soon, as the municipality works to accommodate residents’ availability and ensure maximum participation.

Ekurhuleni’s initiative to partner with IPPs is seen as a critical step toward addressing the ongoing energy crisis in South Africa.

The city aims to appoint multiple IPPs to generate up to 1 500 MW of electricity, providing long-term contracts of 20 years.

This strategic move is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on the national grid, stabilise local energy supply, and enhance energy security for residents and businesses in the region.

The IPPs selected by Ekurhuleni will be tasked with generating electricity through various technologies, including renewable sources such as solar and wind power, alongside other viable methods.

For those who wish to submit feedback or seek additional information, the City of Ekurhuleni encourages residents to contact the municipality directly via email on April.dlamini@ekurhuleni.gov.za and Jabulile.kgomo@ekurhuleni.gov.za
