Springs’ Supernova Armwrestling Club celebrates victory at South African Championships
Armwrestling is a growing sport that welcomes people of all backgrounds to its platform.
Springs-based Supernova Armwrestling Club has one again done the town proud. The club attended the South African Armwrestling Championships at Laerskool Concordia in Boksburg on April 3 and 4.
The two-day competition brought as many as 200 athletes through its doors. Rosemary Botha, the club’s president and president of the South African Armwrestling Federation, says it was astounding to be part of the event.
“It was amazing to be part of the capping ceremony of our first Protea athletes and I was proud to be their president in this great sport.”
Team Supernova did not walk away from this event empty-handed as members excelled in their respectable divisions.
“I obtained my gold, left and right, for Grand Master (50 to 59 years, ladies U80kg and competed against my rival Grand Master 80kg+ division and came second.

“It was an honour to compete against Edith van Heerden from Mpumalanga (Champs 4 Africa Club based in Witbank).”
Rosemary adds that armwrestling in South Africa still has a long way to go as far as the training of coaches and officials is concerned.
“Each day we are seeing more and more growth in our sport.”
Their journey for the year has just begun.
“Our biggest obstacle for now is to find sponsorships to send a full team of Protea athletes to our next Africa Championships in Abuja, Nigeria and then the World Championships in Bulgaria.”
