Springs Boys High shines at St Dunstan’s Easter Sports Festival despite tough competition
The St Dunstan’s Easter Sports Festival is an annual event where the best schools showcase their sporting talents.
The St Dunstan’s Easter Sports Festival in Benoni was a fun and educative learning curve for Springs Boys High School. The event, during the Easter long weekend, saw schools from all over the country and Zimbabwe battling it out for the winning spot.
Although the hockey and rugby teams from the school did not place in the top four as they hoped, they took home much-needed lessons from facing their competition.
“Both our first teams performed well throughout the festival.
“The level of competition was top tier. We could not get the results we desired but it gave us the impetus to set a target or bar to meet for next year’s festival,” says the school’s sports manager, Bongani Pellemu.
He added it was always exciting to measure oneself against the best schools and to challenge oneself to strive for growth in all aspects of a school.
“This was the case for us and we will be in a better position to perform for the rest of the season’s tournaments and games.”
The teams performed as follows:
Rugby
*Against Lomagundi (Zimbabwe) 17-31 (loss)
*Against St John’s Harare 22-5 (win)
*Against Helpmekaar 3-10 (loss)
Hockey
*Against Reddam Waterfall 1-3 (loss)
*Against CBC Zimbabwe (tournament winners) 0-4 (loss)
*Against Hillcrest (KwaZulu-Natal) 2-1 (win)
*Against Höerskool Goudveld 0-1 (loss)
*Against Thomas More College 3-0 (win)
Pellemu states while they could compete with bigger schools the school still needed facilities to match their opponents to compete at their level.
“We would like to build a hockey astroturf, refurbish our tennis courts and revamp our school gym. This requires financial investment and if anyone can assist, reach out to the school.”
