Residents tackle overgrown grass at Protea Park amid safety concerns

The community members said the city's inactivity led to them taking matters into their own hands.

Community members gathered to clean up at Protea Park and tackle the overgrown grass, which poses a safety concern for residents.

The organiser of the initiative, Gerhard Potgieter, said the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has been inconsistent in its maintenance of parks for years, which has resulted in overgrown grass and increased illegal dumping.

“The CoE does nothing to keep these parks clean. “The CoE does nothing to keep these parks clean.

“I have been to the parks department, and there are about 8 to 11 tractors, most of them broken. Allegedly, only one tractor is working. We have a problem with mice and snakes because of the overgrown grass.”

He added that the team, made up of 15 community members, used a tractor, two lawnmowers, and a slasher to cut the grass.

“Our community also has a group of night patrollers. They report on activity in the park which makes us concerned about our safety,” Potgieter said.

He added that the initiative will extend to other parks.

“A notable example is community member Hannes Meyer, who has been keeping Violet Park clean and well-maintained through a similar project.”
