Springs court sentences rapist to 15 years behind bars for 2024 attack on woman

A 37-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after a detailed police investigation led to his conviction for rape in Springs.

The Springs Magistrate’s Court sentenced Siyanda Mzwandile Dladla (37) to 15 years imprisonment after he raped a 25-year-old woman in 2024.

Dladla was found guilty on July 1 after a lengthy investigation by Detective Constable Dalveena Arikum of the Springs Family Violence, Child Protection Services and Sexual Offences Unit.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed that the incident happened on December 7, 2024.

“The victim was out drinking with her friend at a tavern in Springs. While they were there, her friend’s boyfriend arrived, and the victim was left alone after the friend left with him,” she said.

Sekgobela added that the victim left the establishment to try to hitchhike home. The accused then offered to help her get a ride.

“They walked down the street, and along the way, he grabbed and dragged her into nearby bushes, where he raped her. After the rape, he took her halfway to her place,” she said.

The rape case was registered at the Springs SAPS and assigned to Arikum, whose investigation led to Dladla’s arrest.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole was proud of Arikum’s dedication, which helped shrink the space for rapists in Ekurhuleni and ensured justice for victims.
