Bert Collins Boxing Club shines at Gauteng Development Tournament with gold wins
Young fighters from Bert Collins Boxing Club impressed at the Gauteng Development Tournament in Randfontein, bringing home several wins and proving their growing dominance in the ring.
Bert Collins Boxing Club returned from the Gauteng Development Boxing tournament with gold medals. The tournament was hosted by Randgate Boxing Club in Randfontein on September 6. Head Coach Jeanette Dyzel told the Springs Advertiser that the club dominated the tournament.
Seven boxers from the club participated in five fights against boxers from Pretoria, Krugersdorp, and Kagiso. Laerskool Brakpan Oos’s JT Mienie (13) was the first to climb through the ropes against 12-year-old TR van Wyk from Krugersdorp West.
“Mienie was dominating the ring from round one and won his bout on a 3/0 points decision,” said Dyzel.
Tiaan Scholtz (14) from Laerskool Christiaan Beyers was the second to enter the ring against M. Griffin, a 13-year-old boxer from Shape-up Boxing Club in Pretoria.
Dyzel said that Scholtz was too strong for his opponent and won on an RSC (referee stop contest) in round one. Third to climb into the ring was Tristan van Tonder (15) of Olympia Park School against 15-year-old B. Ngomane from Centurion Boxing Club in Pretoria.
The head coach shared that it was a very hard bout, but with his consistency and skills, he was once again declared the winner on a 3/0 points decision.

Mohammed Ngcobo from the club’s elite squad was the fourth to enter the ring against elite boxer OOM Khumalo from Wits Boxing Club in Johannesburg.
Dyzel said that Ngcobo started off with excellent boxing skills and overpowered his opponent in the first round, winning on an RSC in round one. Eugene Scholtz sealed the tournament and entered the ring against TS Sithole from Kagiso Boxing Club.
“It was a hard bout, but unfortunately for Eugene, the referee was too quick to stop the bout in the last minute of round three, and he lost on an RSC in round 3,” said Dyzel.
She expressed that she, along with coaches Frans van der Linde and Minnet Kritzinger, are very happy with the boxers’ performances over the past few weeks. She said that the boxers are their pride and joy, adding that it is a privilege to train the youngsters and help them succeed with their dreams.
The club trains on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00. Anyone interested is welcome to phone or WhatsApp Dyzel at 069 207 9481.
The tournament hosted by the club on September 13 will start at 12:00. Entrance is R20 for adults and R10 for children. The community is encouraged to come and support the boxers in the ring.
