Springs Civic Centre to host Umphakatsi We maSwati cultural celebration
The annual Umphakatsi We maSwati Traditional Council event returns with song, dance, social awareness talks and opportunities for the youth.
The Umphakatsi We maSwati Traditional Council is inviting the Springs and Kwatsaduza communities to their annual cultural celebration on September 20 at the Springs Civic Centre main hall. The festivities will begin at 09:00.
According to the council’s secretary general, Bheki Simelane, this year’s event will focus on education and raising awareness about social ills affecting the community. Various cultural groups, including Zulu and Xhosa performers, will be part of the programme.
Simelane said the event aims to instil pride in cultural identity while also tackling issues such as gender-based violence, substance abuse, rape, and teenage pregnancy.
“The youth present will also have opportunities to be referred for learnerships, job placements, and skills development,” he added.

He noted that this year’s edition has grown significantly, with participation from stakeholders such as the Cultural, Religious and Linguistic (CRL) Rights Commission, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Social Development, the Department of Justice, and the Ekurhuleni Heritage Subdivision.
Senior traditional leaders from the Royal Family in Eswatini, as well as Traditional Councils from across Gauteng, will also attend.
“This shows growth and a willingness from our community council to strengthen collaboration when addressing matters of national importance,” said Simelane.
The celebration will feature live entertainment, including Imbali yemaSwati and well-known performing artist Joe Nina. Attendees are encouraged to wear traditional attire to mark the occasion and celebrate heritage.
