EMPD arrests man speeding at 154km/h

The metro police said the motorist was stopped after complaints of reckless driving in an area linked to fatal crashes.

EMPD Speed Unit officers arrested a 32-year-old man for speeding in Springs on the afternoon of September 17. The EMPD stated that it had received several complaints about a driver speeding on Nigel and Allen roads, which resulted in several fatal accidents.

It had its officers set up high-speed monitoring equipment to check for compliance with the designated speed limit of 60km/h on that road.

“Officers stopped a motorist driving a black BMW sedan after the speed measuring equipment clocked the car at 154km/h. The driver had no satisfactory reasons for contravening the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996. After the video footage evidence was shown to him, officers immediately arrested him,” said the EMPD.

The EMPD said the driver was detained at the Springs Police Station and will soon appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court.

The EMPD urged drivers to be responsible and adhere to speed limits, adding that speeding is a primary contributing factor to road fatalities across the metro.
