WATCH: Dr Johan Jurgens Grade Nine learners showcase entrepreneurship at market day
Dr Johan Jurgens School Grade Nine learners got hands-on business experience by running stalls and selling products at their market day.
Dr Johan Jurgens High School held a market day for its Grade Nine learners on September 26, giving them the opportunity to showcase their creativity and entrepreneurial flair.
The event allowed learners to run their own stalls, sell products and gain practical experience in business and teamwork while engaging with the school community. Some learners from other grades also attended, proudly wearing traditional attire.
EMS teachers Selina Matabire and Bathabile Mkhize used the event to teach learners the practicalities of entrepreneurship.
Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, Matabire said there were 37 stalls selling a variety of products including food, desserts and games.
She explained that the market day helps learners understand how to run a business, preparing them for the future should they choose to become business owners.
“With the unemployment rate in the country, we are equipping them with business skills. Instead of teaching entrepreneurship only in class, it is easier for them to understand when doing it practically, hence market day, learning through earning profit,” said Matabire.
She added that each learner paid R20 as rent for their stall and had to purchase all items for their business themselves. “I want the learners to know that running a business involves risk and profit is not guaranteed,” she said.

One learner, Nandipha Mokoena, who ran a stall with her friend Angel Sefuthi, said planning for the day was challenging.
Mokoena realised that running a business is not easy and involves taking risks. Their stall sold tacos, chips, dunked wings, cheesy balls and more.
“People came to our stall and we did not think we would run out of food so quickly. Our sauces finished in no time, but we are grateful for the support from our schoolmates,” Mokoena said.
