Springs Gold Rotary to host potjie cookout fundraiser at museum
The Springs Gold Rotary Club is bringing people together for fellowship, food and fun at their potjie cookout on October 11 at the Springs Mine and Military Museum.
The Springs Gold Rotary Club is inviting Springs and neighbouring communities to their potjie cookout, which will be held at the Springs Mine and Military Museum on October 11.
The cookout will start at 11:00.
The club’s fundraising chair, Louise Schaap, said the aim of the event is fellowship and fun. It will help to get to know the Rotarians, other dignitaries, and persons of interest in the area, and to lay a solid basis for collaboration with all.
With the event hosted at the museum, she also said it is about showcasing the museum and having an exclusive behind-the-scenes interaction with the curators to chat about the exhibits.
All the clubs on the East Rand, along with other interested parties, are invited to participate and enter a team of four. She added that each team must submit their favourite recipe and an estimation of the cost per person for eight people before the closing date of October 3.
“We encourage each team or club to invite people to join – prospective members, future sponsors, family, friends or dignitaries. Teams must pick a theme and decorate their ‘stall’ accordingly,” said Schaap.
Schaap also said that the club will purchase all the ingredients and have them on hand on the day. The recipes will be placed in a hat, and each team will draw a recipe on the day.
They will then proceed to cook the potjie. She encouraged people to bring their own potjie pots, gas bottle, tables, chairs, gazebo and cookware.
Schaap added, “You are welcome to bring secret ingredients you think you might need as well. You are encouraged to ‘borrow’ items or ingredients from other teams.”

She shared that once cooked, the potjie will be judged by a ‘celebrity’ judge, and there will be entertainment as well. The cost per team is R800, and R100 per extra guest.
The four team members do not pay for their meals. The museum will have a cash bar to raise funds for the upkeep of the venue.
“Should you have any military or mining memorabilia lying around, feel free to either loan or donate it to the museum. Add a write-up for reference, and Tony da Cruz and Errol Brits will gladly put it on display,” she said.
October celebrates the Rotary PolioPlus Program, a Rotary International volunteer initiative to eradicate polio worldwide, and funds raised will go towards supporting this initiative.
