Rotary Clubs host potjiekos competition at Springs Mining and Military Museum

Rotary Clubs from across the East Rand gathered at the Springs Mining and Military Museum for a lively potjiekos competition and fundraiser.

The Rotary Clubs of Springs Gold, Benoni Van Ryn and the East Rand eClub were hosted by the Springs Mining and Military Museum under Tony Da Cruz on October 11 for a day of fun and fellowship, with good food to boot.

The clubs hosted various teams for their potjie competition as part of the club’s fundraiser.

Event organiser Louise Schaap told the Springs Advertiser that visitors to the museum were lured closer by the tantalising smells of lamb, beef, vegetable, mutton and chicken with pasta and cheese floating in the air.

She said that the competition “hotted” up with some essential ingredients, utensils and even a whole potjie disappearing as certain Rotarians pounced when team members were not paying attention.

She added that the judge, Chef Xtine, made her rounds to check on the proceedings, after which teams had to plate up their creations and present them to her.

Team Stew Above Self fielded two potjies hoping to snatch first place, but the two Springs Gold Team Underdogs, Rotarians Rian Currie and Jones Mnisi, won the competition, and their mutton/lamb potjie took first place.

Mnisi told the publication that he was happy that he and his teammate won the competition.

He said, “It was a great learning opportunity to learn all the different types of potjie dishes from all around and make friends.”

Schaap congratulated the winners and said that they kept to their word and persevered.

“Thank you to Tony and the Springs Mining and Military Museum, the Rotarians and visitors for your enthusiastic participation,” she concluded.
