Struisbult aftercare celebrates a year of big wins for young learners

A retired teacher refused to hang up her chalk and instead turned her garage into an aftercare centre that is already transforming young learners in Struisbult.

Sundra Ngwenya (62) is a teacher who retired after 37 years of experience in 2023. Last year, she decided that her journey in teaching wasn’t over yet, and that’s when she turned her home garage in Struisbult into a hub for the development of young children by opening an aftercare centre.

To celebrate this year’s milestones, Struisbult Aftercare hosted its closing lunch at McDonald’s in Springs on November 28, before reopening next year.

“I started this because I realised that most children in primary school do not know how to read or do basic mathematics, especially the Grade Ones,” Ngwenya said.

She reflected on the learners’ achievements, stating that there are children who now read more than 30 books a year.

“It makes me happy when I see their report card and become more confident because it shows that we are making progress. Sometimes, when we do our sentences, I will ask them to do five, and they will volunteer to do 10 instead,” she said joyfully.

The day’s programme included reciting the class rules and rendering speeches. Ngwenya watched with pride as the learners spoke fondly of her, with most calling her kind and helpful.

“Last year, I used to be quiet, but now I’m more outspoken. Our teacher is the kindest teacher I have ever met.

“Even when we hadn’t done our work, she pushed us to do it. This year for term four mathematics, I got 100%,” said learner Simthembile Fakude.

Ngwenya expressed her pride in her learners’ achievements and her anticipation for 2026. She pleaded with the community to donate books she can use at her centre.
