Springs entrepreneur shares lessons from starting her own business

Dersley resident Elmonita Engelbrecht reflects on her journey into entrepreneurship and encourages others to believe in their potential and take the leap.

In a world of consumers and followers, there are people like Elmonita Engelbrecht (39), an innovator who took a risk by venturing into entrepreneurship by starting a perfume business.

Originally from Kimberley and residing in Dersley, Elmonita is a qualified life coach and biblical counsellor who spent the past 15 years as a full-time housewife.

Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, she reflected on her journey in business, the obstacles, as well as the lessons she learnt. Elmonita shared how her parents inspired her journey in entrepreneurship.

“Business runs in my blood. Their example motivated me to pursue business opportunities. I later attended an online seminar that provided valuable insight into starting my own fragrance brand. That’s how I came about starting Elmo – Enough Let’s Move On,” she said.

With an educational background in teaching, Elmonita said studying at the University of Free State strengthened her passion for personal development. However, she was not prepared for the challenges that come with starting something new.

“Some of the major challenges included securing start-up capital, advertising the product, and identifying the correct distribution channels.

“I conquered these challenges through perseverance, research, and seeking guidance from others with experience in business,” she said.

She stressed the importance of having a strong support system as well as self-belief.

“The encouragement from the One Another Ladies community and my loved ones has been invaluable. Another key lesson is never to limit yourself and to believe in your potential,” Elmonita said.

She explained how her perfume business is inspired by her personal life journey.

“It represents growth, resilience and purpose.”

Elmonita said that to start your own business, you need to have a clear vision of what you can achieve.

“Believe that anything and everything you need is already within you. Research your idea thoroughly, plan carefully, and then take action with confidence and determination,” she said.
