Life Springs Parkland Hospital hosts pregnancy awareness event for moms-to-be

Mothers-to-be connected with doctors and health professionals during an informative Q&A session focused on evidence-based pregnancy care and well-being.

Life Springs Parkland Hospital hosted a pregnancy awareness event on February 28, during which moms-to-be participated in a Q-and-A session with health professionals. The event was open to the public as an opportunity to give back to the community.

The hospital’s manager, Cora Muller, said, “As a mom of four, I know during pregnancy you hear so many stories. Being informed is extremely important. Everyone has so much to say to you, but you need to decipher it.

“The information we provided today is scientifically proven and evidence-based.”

Yonela Kgwarae, the maternity unit manager, stressed the importance of giving new mothers the opportunity to engage with health professionals.

“In this session, the moms get to speak face-to-face with professionals like doctors, dieticians, psychologists and doulas who answered their questions in detail,” she said.

Sharing advice for expecting moms, she encouraged them not to worry too much about the mode of delivery but instead focus on their well-being.

“We have mothers who come to maternity, and they are so determined for a natural birth, and when it doesn’t work out, they fall into postnatal depression because their birthing plan has been disturbed. What’s important is a healthy mom and a healthy baby,” she said.

Nurse manager, Nashira Cevikmen, added that moms should always listen to their instincts.

“Pregnancy is not an illness. You need to keep a healthy mindset and enjoy the pregnancy. If you’re not sure, speak to your obstetrician,” Cevikmen said.

Kgwarae stressed the importance of being aware of the misinformation you’re consuming on social media.

“With social media nowadays, everyone can post information, and it’s easy to be misguided. Events like this are here to clarify such,” she said.

Muller shared the following words of advice: ”Enjoy it, it’s such a privilege to have a baby. It’s not something to take for granted, but make sure to look after yourself.”
