LETTER: Resident demands proper maintenance and security at Geduld Cemetery

Springs resident Ian Saville says although overgrown grass at Geduld Cemetery has finally been cut, the grounds still appear neglected.

Springs residents writes:

Following our previous request about the severely overgrown grass at Geduld Cemetery, we can confirm that the grass has finally been cut. Unfortunately, the work was done in a rough and untidy manner, and the cemetery still appears neglected.

A cemetery should be a place of dignity and respect where families can visit their loved ones in a clean and well-maintained environment. Sadly, this is not the case at Geduld Cemetery.

We ask the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) to inform the public what the maintenance plan is for the cemetery going forward. Regular upkeep is clearly needed to prevent the grounds from again becoming overgrown and neglected.

In addition, sections of the perimeter wall and the cemetery gate have been stolen or badly damaged and remain unrepaired. This leaves the cemetery open to further vandalism, theft and illegal access.

We call on the CoE to urgently address the following:
Repair the damaged and stolen sections of the wall and gate. Implement proper and regular maintenance of the cemetery. Improve security to prevent ongoing vandalism and crime.

Geduld Cemetery is a place of remembrance for many families in the community. It deserves to be treated with the dignity and respect such a place requires. A comment was requested from the City of Ekurhuleni on March 18, and no response was received at the time of publication.
