UPDATE: Family confirms death of 11-year-old shooting victim

The family has shared the news of Waldo’s passing and asks for privacy during this time.

Eleven-year-old Waldo Verwey, who was shot during a home robbery in Casseldale last week, has passed away.

Waldo had been on life support at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, following the shooting at his family’s home on Clydesdale Road.

He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was treated on the scene before being airlifted to hospital in critical condition. In a media statement released at 10:20 today (Thursday), the family announced his passing.

“It is with profound sadness that the family confirms that 11-year-old Waldo has gained his angel wings,” the statement reads.

“The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported Waldo during his fight for life – to the medical teams, emergency responders, community members, and all who offered prayers, care, and compassion.”

“At this time, the family kindly requests privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved boy. Further information and funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.”
