Springs Regional Court sentences man to 10 years behind bars for stealing cables

Sehole Martin (42) was arrested in 2024 after security officers received a tip-off about stolen cables.

The Springs Regional Court sentenced Sehole Martin (42) to 10 years’ imprisonment on February 16 after he was found in possession of stolen cables from Transnet in 2024.

Martin was charged with tampering with and damaging essential infrastructure. His conviction follows an investigation by Detective Sergeant Busi Mahlangu.

According to Springs police spokesperson, Sergeant Charity Zwane, security officers from Amahlo Security Company acted on information received regarding cable theft on March 15, 2024.

“While tracing the suspects, they came across two men who matched the description provided. Upon stopping their vehicle at Mogadushe Street in Slovo Park, one suspect fled the scene on foot, leaving behind his accomplice,” she said.

She added that Martin was found in possession of a bag containing two black 12-core copper cables and one 19-core copper cable.

“A Transnet official positively identified the recovered cables as property belonging to Transnet. The suspect was immediately arrested and detained at the Springs Police Station,” Zwane said.

Zwane also said Martin has been declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“Station management commended Mahlangu for her dedication and commitment to ensuring that offenders are brought to justice,” she said.
