Delivery driver ambushed with rope trap in Springs, attackers flee
A 31-year-old delivery driver claims that the Springs police failed to open a case after he was assaulted by three men who tried to rob him of his bike.
A delivery driver in Springs claims he was violently assaulted by three men while on duty on February 19. He also alleged that the police failed to open a case despite his report.
Horacio Ngovene (31) says he had an order to deliver food to the nursing home at the Far East Rand Hospital.
According to Ngovene, on his way back from the hospital, a rope was deliberately stretched across the road, causing him to fall.
“One end was tied to a pole, and the other held in tension. I hit the rope, fell, and as I tried to stand, a man ran toward me and seized the bike.
“When I tried to fight back against one who was escaping with the bike, the rest came after me. That’s when I realised there were three of them,” he said.

He added that the men pulled him to a nearby ditch, where they proceeded to assault him.
“One of them took my shoelaces to tie my hands. One had his knee on my neck, and the other pressed painfully against my groin,” Ngovene said.
Ngovene said an ambulance stopped close by, which caused his attackers to let go and flee the scene.
“Seeing the bike on the road in the dark, they thought they had hit someone and reversed. A second ambulance arrived soon after, and that presence caused the attackers to flee,” he said.
Ngovene added that the attackers left without the bike, which now has a busted back tyre.
“The paramedics in the ambulance followed closely behind as I pushed the bike. I was able to get someone to take the bike from me as I made my way to the hospital to get medical attention,” Ngovene explained.

Ngovene sustained injuries to his hands and knee, as well as internal pain. He added that he made his way to the Springs Police Station on February 21 to open a case.
He claims that he gave a written statement, but was allegedly told that a case would not be opened.
“The police officer asked me if I had seen the faces of my attackers, to which I responded that I had not. He then told me that the case would go nowhere,” Ngovene said.
Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane confirmed that no case docket was opened regarding the reported matter.
“The incident is under internal review to determine why the client was not assisted. Station management is treating the matter with seriousness,” Zwane said.
