An explanation on the state of our dumpsites is required

Springs resident Bob Gillies has become frustrated with the state of the Daggafontein dumpsite.
He is especially frustrated with poor maintenance at the dumpsite and the seeming lack of concern on the part of the metro.
Gillies writes:
Today’s Advertiser shows a January 2006 article of “ what a dump” picture. I am not sure which one it is, but a few months ago I wrote about the Daggafontein dump being in a disgusting state.
It was cleaned up and a pleasure to visit again, but this week I went to dump and again it was back to its old state.
There is no vehicle access up the ramp to dump into the skips and the top parking area is full of refuse again.
All the skips were full and rubbish has been dumped metres high in the whole dump area.
One skip was being emptied into a refuse truck, which it’s not designed for.
This is 15 years later and the question is: Who is getting the contracts to run these dumps and why are they not brought to book by Ekurhuleni for letting them get into the state they are?
When the main Rietvlei dump was closed last December for over six months, Springs had to cart waste to Brakpan and Platkop dump sites, which must have cost a fortune in fuel alone.
Rietvlei apparently was closed because the contract ended in December, but still six months later Ekurhuleni had failed to appoint a new contractor to run it.
Why is this? An explanation from the top Ekurhuleni officials is required.
