Nappy fun run

The Nappy Run’s official 5km fun run event is taking place at Joburg Zoo November 3.

The Nappy Run is a joint project between the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in SA (NCPPDSA) and the National Association for Persons with Cerebral Palsy.

The NCPPDSA, the national NGO for the promotion and protection of the rights of people with physical disabilities, believes that society’s knowledge and understanding of disability issues is directly related to the level of responsiveness to the needs and rights, and social inclusion, of people with disabilities.

According to Unicef’s annual State of the World’s Children: Children with disabilities report, released in May, children with disabilities and their communities would both benefit if society focused on what those children can achieve, rather than what they cannot do.

This is exactly what this campaign aims to draw attention to through the month-long awareness campaign as captured in its slogan, ‘children with disabilities, our future with abilities’.

“Therefore this is a national campaign with the aim to acknowledge and celebrate children with disabilities,” says Riaaan Manser, Nappy Run 2013 ambassador.

It is also an appeal for donations of packs of nappies to provide basic comfort to our country’s most vulnerable groups.

Nappy Rands can also be donated online www.nappyrun.org.za and all proceeds will be used to purchase nappies in various sizes. The nappies will be distributed to care centres across the country to provide the much-needed incontinence care and comfort for children with disabilities.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness for South Africa’s most marginalised and vulnerable group of people.

Anyone can join by walking, running, strolling or rolling.

Entry is R50 and children U/3 free. All proceeds will be used to purchase nappies for kids in care centres across the country.

Registration starts at 7am and the race starts at 9am.

Wear a cloth nappy in a creative way.
