Striders exceed 1 067 T-shirts for charity

Springs Striders hosted a run, walk or crawl for 67 minutes on Sunday in honour of Mandela Day at the Springs Rugby Club.

The club asked for each of the participants to donate new or used T-shirts, which were handed over to the Rotary Club Springs Park to distribute at their discretion.

Water and soft drinks were available for the exhausted walkers and runners as they completed their laps around the block at the Springs Rugby Club for 67 minutes without stopping.

Last year the Striders collected 770 T-shirts and this year they had a new goal of collecting 1 000 T-shirts.

The club has exceeded their goal and collected over 1 067 shirts for charity.

When the Striders started this initiative five years ago, their goal was to collect 67 shirts.

Five years later, they have even surpassed 67 plus 1 000 donated T-shirts.

Over and above all the T-shirts, people donated a number of gowns, slippers and shoes, as well as children’s toys.

The toys will be taken to a children’s home in Etwatwa, Norah’s Educare Centre.

Funds received on Sunday, by selling boerewors rolls and black refuse bags (which were donated to the Striders) will also go to the children’s home.

Club members state: “It’s a small effort for great rewards.”
