Kommers decided to help the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife conservation, for which R12 000 over the weekend.
Hoërskool Hugenote learner Keanu Kommers is a keen swimmer and made sure that this year’s Midmar Mile would be his best yet.
Kommers was part of an exclusive club of swimmers called the 8 Mile Club.
As the name suggests, swimmers in the 8 Mile Club swim the one-mile race a total of eight times over the weekend.
Many charities, such as Cansa, were present at the prestigious event.
Kommers decided to help the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife conservation.

All donations were done online and the conservation was able to raise R12 000 over the weekend thanks to the participants and many other kind donors from all over.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is entrusted with the long-term conservation of the region’s rich biodiversity for the people of South Africa, and they are particularly aimed at preserving rhino and curbing poaching.
The swimmer says: “Out of all the charities, this one is closest to my heart.
“They conserve all animals, but particularly the rhino, and this is an issue close to my heart.”
Members of the 8 Mile Club had the special privilege of being transported back to the starting line on a boat every time they finished, as opposed to the bus that everyone else took.

Kommers says it was a big challenge to swim the mile eight times.
He says: “We would go back to the starting line on the boat, where we would get massages and eat and then we had to get back in again.”
The 8 Mile Club finished in style by performing eight push-ups each at the finishing line after the final race.
Kommers says he will swim the Midmar Mile for as long as he can and try and improve his best time.
