Molupi selected for Gold Squad

It’s a fantastic achievement for Molupi and his club, Springs Town Bowling, as this is the first time a member of the club has been selected.

John Molupi is one selection away from playing for the national team for bowling.

This comes after Molupi was selected for the Gold Squad on February 15.

It’s a fantastic achievement for Molupi and his club, Springs Town Bowling, as this is the first time a member of the club has been selected.

“This was always something I was working towards.

“Before this, I was part of the Gold Squad Reserve team.

“Being part of the Gold Squad means I can get my Protea colours at any time if I get called up to play for the national team,” says Molupi.

His selection for the Gold Squad marks a remarkable journey for Molupi who only started playing in 2010, and says the belief his coach had in him propelled him to try his best.

“When I first started my coach said I would be Ekurhuleni champion in five years time, but I beat that record and became a champion in 2013.

“He made me believe I could go far, but sadly, he never saw me become a champion as he died in July 2013,” says Molupi.

Since he first became a champion in 2013, Molupi has since competed in the national champs, where he came in the last 16 in the singles category last year.

He is aiming to improve on this, and make it to the last eight.

To help him prepare for his inevitable call-up for the national team, Molupi will be heading to Port Elizabeth as part of the Ekurhuleni Bowls Inter-District Open Team on March 7.

There he, alongside his team, will compete against 20 other district teams from around the country.

The 33-year-old says they have a good track record as a team in the competition as they won gold in George in 2018, and lost by two points in Johannesburg in 2019.

“We’ve got a good chance to win gold again this year.

“The players we played with in George are back in the team, so I have a good feeling about it,” says Molupi.
