WATCH: Local karateka reaches international stage

Chichima Sikhonde is due to compete in Dubai after he won big at the Japan Karate Association (JKS) South African Nationals.

The seventeen-year-old from Springs Boys High School came third in the kata and fifth in kumite. The event took place at the Portuguese Hall in Johannesburg.

“The preparation for this one differed from how I prepared for other competitions. I did not go into it with the mindset to improvise.

“This time, I thought about every move I wanted to make. I put a lot of thought into it because I wanted to win,” said Sikhonde.

He said that when he realised he had won, there was a moment of disbelief.

“It was mind-blowing. I fought until the very end, so I was exhausted. Even on the ride back home, I kept looking at the medal,” he added.

Sikhonde admitted he was nervous competing because most of his competitors were black belts, and he came in with a brown belt.

“I always put pressure on myself to perform,” he said.

He qualified for the JKS national team going to Dubai in September.

“Now, the pressure is coming from all directions. I know I will have to train harder to do well in the international competition.

“I don’t expect any of it to be easy. It will take a great afford, but I know I will pull through,” Sikhonde added.

He requested the community and businesses help fund his Dubai trip. He also needs his two coaches to accompany him.

Anyone willing to help can contact the JKS dojo manager in Springs and Tsakane, Carla Verster, on 071 361 1821.
