Awesome retelling
DVD: Jack the Giant Slayer Reviewed by: Natasha Kotze Review made possible by: NuMetro Rating: Awesome!

This is a retelling of the age-old tale of Jack and the Beanstalk and will keep young and old entertained.
Sent to the market by his uncle to sell their horse and cart in order to buy thatch for their roof, the young farmhand Jack (Nicholas Hoult) unwittingly steps in to rescue Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) from a band of ruffians.
The cart is stolen and Jack ends up trading the horse to a monk for a few beans, which the monk says he should not get wet in any circumstances.
Arriving home without the horse and cart or the thatch, his uncle is unimpressed and he throws the beans out before setting off to sell some of Jack’s keepsakes. Jack picks up the beans, but doesn’t notice one which falls through a crack in the floor.
The princess, who had run away from home seeking adventure, arrives at Jack’s home as the rain is pouring down.
While she’s there, the bean under the floorboards take root and a giant stalk carries Isabelle and the entire house away.
Jack accompanies the king’s guard, led by the brave knight Elmond (Ewan McGregor), to rescue the princess from the unknown.
I really enjoyed this film. Although we all know the tale, it gets a new twist in this re-telling.
Although I liked Jack and Isabelle, it was really the support actors that made this film for me.
Ewan McGregor as the brave and witty Elmond and Eddie Marsan as his side-kick Crawe, were especially great and the rapport between the characters were brilliant.
The bad guys, both human and giant, were incredibly vile and evil – which breaks away from the more-child friendly Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum version of old.
