Cross-Country Championships select Mpumalanga team for September nationals
The provincial championships were hosted to select 18 athletes in each age group who will represent the province in the upcoming national championships.
Athletes from across Mpumalanga gathered at Curro Bankenveld recently for the highly competitive Athletics Mpumalanga Cross-Country Championships 2026.
According to Bongani Nkosi, one of the organisers, the championships, held on August 15, were hosted to select a team that will represent Mpumalanga at national level in September.
Eighteen athletes were selected in each age group, ranging from eight years old to 90-plus.
“Getting those top athletes enabled us to have a formal team that will represent our beautiful province at nationals,” Nkosi said.
Despite a bit of cold experienced in the morning, Nkosi said everything went well as they kicked off the races with the senior citizens, followed by the kids once the weather cleared.
