GALLERY: Shooting up a storm

After a long day of shooting, with all of the firearms safely stored away, the Club Chairman, Marius Blom presided over the Awards Ceremony

The Sergio Martinel shoot took place this past weekend and contesters were all shooting to take first place.

The annual shooting competition of the Witbank Practical Shooting Club took place on Saturday, September 28.

This competition was inaugurated in 2001 as a tribute to one of the now deceased pioneers of practical pistol shooting in Witbank and is named in his honor.

Over the years that followed, additional trophies were added to be awarded for other shooting disciplines.

Each of these trophies bears the name of a club member or patron who made a significant contribution in the history of the club.

The shooting categories or disciplines now include Clay Pigeon Shotgun, .22 Steel Silhouette, Practical Rifle, and two Black Powder events, one for handguns and one for rifles.

There were twenty-nine shooters participating in the competition this year.

Overall winner Mike Hickey and Chairman Marius Blom from WPSC Witbank practical shooting club.

The shooting commenced shortly after 09.30 and continued throughout the day until approximately 16.30.

During the day, shooters moved around the six ranges in order to compete in the various disciplines and to accumulate as many points as possible in the hope of winning a trophy, or a medal and a certificate.

The floating trophies were awarded as follows:

The Sergio Martinel floating trophy went to Mike Hickey who had the highest aggregate score.

This is the second time that Mike has won this trophy since 2001.

The Johan van Rensburg floating trophy went to Mike Hickey for the Practical Handgun event.

The Lukas Aggenbach floating trophy donated by SA Jagters was awarded to Thinus Van Vreden in the Practical Rifle category.

The Stan Orchard floating trophy sponsored by Central Gas was awarded to Thinus van Vreden in the Clay Pigeon Shotgun category.

The Gerald Soutar floating trophy for the .22 Silhouette Rifle category was won by Frikkie Horn.

The best aggregate score in the two Black Powder events was achieved by Willem K. Nel.

He was awarded the Greg Goosen floating trophy.

Medals and certificates were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category.

The Chairman extended the thanks of the WPSC to all who participated and to those who contributed in the organizing of this annual event, additionally to Boeta Opperman and his wife who catered throughout the day, to Aqualine for the art work and supply of the medals, to Johan Greyling for the provision of Black Powder (Swartkruit) and to the Range Officers.

The Witbank Practical Shooting Club extends an invitation to all legal firearm owners who wish to join in order to preserve or improve their competency with the firearms that they possess.

The WPSC ranges are inspected annually and fully accredited by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications.
