Law enforcement agencies in Mpumalanga executed a series of high-density multidisciplinary operations in Nkangala District between September 10 and 13.

The operation formed part of a province-wide crime-combatting initiative aimed at tackling a range of criminal activities, including drug-related offences, illegal immigration, illegal firearm possession, liquor offences and violent crimes.

According to SAPS, the arrests reflect a determined effort by law enforcement authorities to restore law and order and ensure safer communities throughout the district.

Breakdown of arrests

A breakdown of the arrests reveals that 40 suspects were apprehended for contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa, while 49 were arrested for allegedly dealing in and possession of drugs. Police also arrested 11 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, highlighting continued concerns about road safety in the district.

In addition, 11 suspects were arrested for allegedly illegal dealing in liquor, and two were found in possession of alleged illegal firearms. Authorities also made arrests linked to violent crimes, with 26 suspects facing charges of alleged assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and 12 arrested for alleged common assault.

Property-related offences also featured during the operation, with seven suspects arrested for alleged malicious property damage. Police also detained 77 suspects for various other criminal offences.

Court appearances pending

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in various magistrate’s courts serving the Nkangala District in the coming days.

Speaking on the success of the operations across Mpumalanga, provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise commended all role players for their commitment and dedication.

“The successes of Operation Shanela II demonstrate our unwavering commitment to ensuring that the people of Mpumalanga are and feel safe. We will continue to deal decisively with criminality, from illegal immigration and illicit mining to serious and violent crimes,” said Modise.

Community members have also been urged to continue working with law enforcement agencies by reporting criminal activities and providing information that may assist in preventing and combating crime.
