Evraz Highveld Steel man plays vital role in mine housing project

The Department of Mineral Resource’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP) is to see to it that quality and affordable housing is provided for mine employees.

Community development is one of the core objectives at Mapochs Mine (Pty) Ltd. Walking hand in hand with the above, the Department of Mineral Resource’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP) is to see to it that quality and affordable housing is provided for mine employees.

In 2012 Mapochs Mine set up a housing committee that comprised of mine management and stakeholders including union representatives.  The mandate was to investigate the types of housing required for operators and artisans.

Mr Barry Cross, a registered architect employed at the Project Support Office at Evraz Highveld, completed a numbers of designs. The committee selected a two bed-roomed, pitched roof 45m2 house.

The Mapochs Mine board of directors approved R 3.6 million (USD 300,000) for the construction of 13 houses in September 2013.
Mr Cross and Mr Llewellyn Nienaber managed the construction program. The program was completed on budget and ahead of schedule, mainly due to the contractor working during the 2013 Christmas shutdown.

The keys were handed to Mr Johannes Maepa, general manager of the mine on Monday, February 10.  Additional houses will be built in 2014/2015.

On February 24, the 13 houses were handed over to employees. To date, 32% of the Mapochs Mine employees live in mine accommodation.
