Xhosa speaking residents from nearby hostel in Ackerville allegedly assaulted Mr Steven Malika. Malika, who is mentally challenged, was assaulted by a group of people who are believed to be staying at the Ackerville Hostel on Monday at about 20:30. A group of about eight people allegedly confronted him and assaulted him with iron bars.
He sustained injuries to his head, shoulder, arm and legs.
The family found him sleeping outside, as he usually does, and they were alerted by his cough. He was found the following day at about 11:00.
According to a family member, they heard that people from the hostel were going around assaulting people near the Value Meat Centre.
Recently during the protest, a Xhosa speaking hostel dweller was allegedly assaulted and shot by protestors and they promised to revenge the assault.
Even though means were made to avoid confrontation it is believed that assault was revenge from the hostel dwellers.
It was reported that leaders from both groups held a meeting and resolved that confrontation should be avoided at cost.
The family said they were concerned about Malika’s injuries and they said they tried several times to call an ambulance and the police but they did not come.
“We have tried previously to contact social workers but we are hitting a brick hall,” they said.
