A woman’s card was allegedly cloned on Thursday morning.
On August 7 Mrs Dorothy Roberts went to withdraw money from the Nedbank ATM at Saveways Crescent Shopping Centre.
“As I approached the machine, a man wearing dark clothing and a cap was leaving the machine, he had left a receipt in the machine and I called him back to inform him of it,” said Roberts.
The man took the slip and walked away from the machine, but according to camera footage provided by Saveways Super Spar, the man lingered around the ATM area. Roberts inserted her card into the machine and put in her pin number.
“Instead of the normal withdrawal request screen, strangely a screen came up requesting my cellular phone number,” continued Roberts.
A man wearing a red top, who was standing very close behind Roberts leant over and told her to press the yes button.
“Before I had chance, he quickly pressed the yes button and walked back,” she added.
Roberts spent some time waiting for something to happen before the screen returned to normal, however the machine did not return her card to her.
Roberts headed to Standard Bank to report that he card had been taken by the machine, the tellers checked her account and discovered that her daily limit of R1 000 had been withdrawn at about the same time she experienced difficulties with the ATM.
Roberts returned to Saveways Crescent Shopping Centre and sought the manager of Saveways Super Spar who showed her the camera footage of the two men who were working together and allegedly tampered with the ATM.
The staff from within the business recognised the two men, who previously attempted using invalid bank cards within the business.
Security stationed outside Spar the previous night had seen these two men acting suspiciously near the ATM and requested that they move on.
Roberts went to the police and opened a case of fraud.
“It’s the first time we have had a cloning at the ATM outside our business, and we hope to assist with the investigation in any way we can,” said the store manager.
