A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with perjury after reporting a hijacking.

He reported the hijacking on September 17. He alleged that he was at a dam with friends, when later on his way home, he was hijacked by a group of men.

During the investigation, police discovered that he gave a false statement and that his grey Honda Civic was also recovered. He was charged with perjury.

He was arrested and appeared in Kriel Magistrate’s Court on September 18 and found guilty.

He was given a suspended sentence of R3 000 or three months’ imprisonment and R2 000 or two months’ imprisonment, which was wholly suspended for three years on conditions that he not be convicted of a crime during that period.
