The office has had its fair share of break-ins in the past, which seem to be continuing.
The latest was on Friday, October 10. The staff in the office fear for their lives in the Roman Catholic Centre, where the office is situated.
“In the past they have stolen chairs and many other items and we have reported all the break-ins, but police say they cannot find any evidence. In the last break-in, the suspects were on top of the ceiling and police were called, but said they cannot use teargas and they left,” said Ms Kate Mabuela, office coordinator.
Burglar doors and steel bars on the windows have been removed. It is believed that thieves used the toilet door and climbed into the ceiling.
A mattress has also been found in one of the rooms, in the hall. The ceiling has been damaged and some lights have been stolen as well.
The office provides advice to people who have different problems and they are referred to relevant departments. It works hand in hand with many departments and organisations.
They also improve policies and practices that affect people’s lives and provide free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities.
