In the wake of the high crime rate at the Licensing Department, the municipality decided to erect a palisade fence around a large portion of ground to create a safe walled-off parking area.
Koos Lubcker, the section head, said, “After what happened with the crime here, we decided our best option was to build the palisade fence. There is only one way in and out and a security guard is stationed at the exit.”
The fence was completed on Sunday, November 30 but there has already been some positive feedback from people following the announcement on Theo van Vuuren’s Facebook page.
The comments are a change of pace from previous opinions regarding the situation at the Licensing Department.
In April alone there were five robberies outside the licensing department that the Witbank News reported on.
Some residents called for more police patrols in the area, while others wanted the office to be relocated altogether.
Mr Lubcker also assured wheelchair users that the offices were fully accessible.
