Remembering Nelson Mandela today
South Africa will on Friday, December 5 commemorate a year since the death of Nelson Mandela, the first President of a democratic South Africa.
Madiba passed away at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg on December 5 last year.
The commemoration of the first anniversary of the passing of Madiba will be celebrated with a wreath laying ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday.
The ceremony will start at 08:00 and it’s open to all South Africans and members of the public are invited to the visit the site throughout of the day to see the wreath.
Government would like to encouraging schools, factories, emergency services, places of worship to ring bells and sirens for exactly three minutes and seven seconds before 10:00 to call the country to attention.
Thereafter South Africans would be asked to observe a moment of silence up to 10:03 in remembrance of Madiba.
After the moment of silence the silence will be broken by singing of the National Anthem across the country and anywhere that South Africans will be gathered.
Hashtag your memories
South Aficans were also urged to participate in the social media campaign and sharre their memories of Madiba using the hashtag “RememberMandela.”

Sport bring people together
The Springboks are set to take on the Proteas in a cricket match at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on December 5, to signifying Madiba’s belief that sport could bring people together more than politics.
